Hold Timmy’s hand through those first few days at nursery….
Starting nursery or pre-school is a really important first step for your little one and, although daunting at first, will eventually help them to become more flexible, adaptable and independent. There are lots of things you can do to help them to feel more comfortable. Why not try a few of these top tips prepared for Timmy Time by the Pre-school Learning Alliance.
Timmy’s Top Ten Tips:
To help your little ones settle in:
1. Meet your child’s ‘key person’. This carer is assigned to take extra care of your little one throughout their time at pre-school – so get to know them and share any important information about your child.
2. Visit your pre-school or nursery in advance. Point out where the cloakroom, toilet and fun play areas are so they become more familiar with their new surroundings before their first full day.
3. Practice new tasks, like hanging up their coat and putting away toys.Teaching your child these simple skills will help them settle in more quickly.
To help you when leaving your child:
4. Be cheerful and positive and try not to stress. If you look happy and relaxed, your child is more likely to be too.
5. Don’t rush off. Make sure your child has enough time to say goodbye. Instead of saying goodbye say something more positive such as “I’ll be back after you’ve had your lunch”. What ever arrangements you make, keep to them.
6. If your child cries try not to worry. Their key person will have lots of tricks to settle them down when you have gone.
7. Talk to them about their experiences and if you have any concerns talk to their ‘key person’.
To help you cope with the separation:
8. Make a plan of your own for their first week, time for you to do chores, hobbies or just relax!
9. Get to know other parents. They are likely to be going through the same emotions and can offer mutual support.
10. Piece of mind – ask if you can make a quick call in the afternoon to check how your child is coping and keep well informed about your nursery. The more you know, the more confident you will feel.
